How much do electric gates cost to install in the Algarve?
Installing electric gates in the Algarve is quoted as three separate costs: the gate itself, the automation kit sized to it, and the installation, including the electrical supply to the gate position. As of 2026 the price is set by whether the gate slides or swings, by the weight and width of the leaves, by how far the power has to travel from the house, and by the safety and access equipment fitted with the motor. Handyman Algarve quotes each job on the gate in front of it, itemised in writing and free, because those specifics move the price more than the motor does.
Electric gates are quoted as three separate costs, and the price of the installation depends on all three: the gate, the automation kit that moves it, and the work of fitting it, which includes getting mains power to the gate. Most surprises in a gate quote come from the third one, and most catalogue prices cover only the first two.
What makes up the cost of an electric gate?
The figures people find online are almost always one part of the job wearing the name of the whole. A price for a gate leaf is not an installed gate, and a price for a motor kit is not an automated gate. The installed cost is the sum of:
- The gate itself. Steel or aluminium, sliding or swing, solid panel or bars, with its pillars, hinges or track. Skipped entirely when you are automating a gate you already have.
- The automation kit. The motor sized to the gate, the control board, the safety photocells, the remotes, and any keypad, intercom or battery backup.
- The installation and electrical work. The power run from the house to the gate, the concrete for the motor base or the track, the fitting, the setting up and the making good.
Each has its own drivers, so a useful quote shows them separately. Those drivers are what follow.
What moves the price of the gate itself?
Sliding or swing. A sliding gate (portão de correr) is one heavy leaf running on a track, and it needs the same length again of clear wall to slide into. Swing gates are two lighter leaves on pillars. The sliding gate is more metal and more groundwork; the swing gate is more hinge and pillar work.
Weight and width. A wider opening means longer leaves, and longer leaves need more section in the frame so they do not sag. Weight rises faster than width does.
Steel or aluminium. Steel is cheaper to buy and heavier, which pushes the motor up a class and means paint and rust care for life. Aluminium costs more as material, weighs less, and holds its finish near the coast without that effort.
Infill. Bars let the wind through. A solid panel is a sail, and on an exposed plot it needs a heavier frame, stronger hinges and a stronger motor to match.
What moves the price of the automation kit?
- Motor class. Motors are rated by the leaf weight and length they can move and by how many cycles a day they are built for. A heavy sliding gate or a solid swing leaf needs the next size up.
- Motor type on swing gates. Articulated arm and linear piston motors bolt onto an existing gate and pillar and are the simplest to fit. Underground motors sit in a box at the hinge line, invisible once fitted, and cost more because the box needs a concrete pocket, drainage, and the gate lifted off its hinges to install.
- Safety kit. Photocells across the opening, force limiting on the board, a warning light and, on heavy leaves near a path, a rubber safety edge. These are part of the price of a gate that is safe to own, not extras.
- Access. The number of remotes, a keypad at the pillar, an intercom or video intercom wired back to the house, or opening from a phone. Each is a line on the quote.
- Battery backup. A small addition at installation, and the one worth having where the gate is the only way to get a car in. In the Algarve 38.6 per cent of dwellings are second homes or seasonal, against 49.4 per cent lived in year round (INE, Censos 2021, quadro Q304, Algarve scope), and on a house that stands empty for months the manual release, the battery and a sealed box at the gate stop being extras.
What moves the installation and electrical cost?
The power run is the item people underestimate. The motor needs its own protected circuit from the house’s electrical board, and the cable has to reach the gate. Through a garden bed that is a morning’s trenching; through block paving, a concrete drive or calçada it is cutting, ducting, armoured cable and putting the surface back so it does not show. The quote should state the metres and the surface, because that is where two quotes for the same gate part company.
Then the groundwork. A sliding gate needs a level concrete foundation along the whole track and a plinth for the motor. A swing gate needs pillars that will not move under a motor pushing on them thousands of times, and underground motors need their pockets cast before the gate goes back. Finally, setting up: programming the travel limits, the force, the photocells and the remotes, and the test that the gate stops and reverses when it meets something.
Is it cheaper to automate the gate I already have?
Usually, and by a wide margin, provided the gate is sound. The test is to push it by hand: a gate that runs smoothly, does not scrape, does not drop at the far end and needs no shove at the end of its travel is ready for a motor. One that drags, whose hinges have play, or whose wheels skip on a bent track needs metalwork first, because a motor repeats the same force in the same place every day and will find the weak point. Where that repair list gets long, a new gate with the automation built in can come out close to the same money, and the quote should show both so the decision is made with the numbers side by side. Once a gate is automated, the faults that follow are mostly small ones, and they are covered in the common problems with electric gate openers.
What should a written quote itemise?
As of 2026, a quote worth accepting shows:
- The gate, if new, with its material, size, infill and finish.
- The motor by make and model, with its rated leaf weight and length.
- The safety equipment, listed item by item.
- Remotes, keypad, intercom and battery backup as separate lines.
- The electrical run in metres, the surface it crosses and its reinstatement.
- The groundwork: track foundation, motor base, pillar work or the underground box.
- The setting up and the handover, including a demonstration of the manual release.
A quote without the electrical line is not cheaper, it is unfinished. The page on electric gate installation in the Algarve covers what the work includes and how a request is handled, and the quote is free.
What should I ask before I accept it?
Ask which motor class is proposed and why, because an undersized motor is a common reason a new installation is back for repair within a few summers. Ask whether the price assumes power is already at the gate. Ask what happens if the existing gate turns out to need work once the old fittings come off, and whether that is quoted now or later. Ask who is responsible for the trench and the reinstatement if another trade is involved. And ask for the manual release to be shown to you on the day, since that is the moment you will remember where the key lives.
