What does a locksmith cost?
A locksmith's price is set by two things before anything else: whether you are locked out or replacing a lock, and what time it is. An opening that keeps the cylinder intact and an opening that destroys it are different jobs, and so are a Tuesday afternoon and a Sunday at 2am. Handyman Algarve quotes the job once it knows which of those you have, at no cost, and the drivers are set out below.
Locksmith pricing looks opaque because two very different situations share one trade. One is an emergency where you are standing outside your own door. The other is planned work where you choose the time. They are priced on different things, and mixing them is why quoted figures vary so widely.
The two jobs behind the price
- A lockout. You are outside, the lock is fine, and what you are paying for is attendance and technique. The variables are the hour, the distance, the lock’s resistance, and whether it can be opened without damage.
- A lock change. Nothing is urgent. You are paying for the hardware and the fitting, and you can choose the appointment. The variables are the lock type and the security grade you move to.
Almost every confusing quote comes from one of these being priced as if it were the other.
What moves a lockout price
| Driver | Why it moves the figure |
|---|---|
| Hour of day | Out of hours attendance is the single largest multiplier |
| Non-destructive vs drilling | Drilling destroys the cylinder, so a replacement is fitted and keyed on the spot |
| Lock type | A basic euro cylinder, an anti-snap cylinder and a multipoint mechanism resist very differently |
| Door and frame | A metal gate, a reinforced door or a swollen timber door changes the approach |
| Access | Whether a window, a patio door or a second entrance offers an easier route |
| Key snapped inside | Extraction first, then either the lock survives or it does not |
What moves a lock change price
- What is actually being replaced. Cylinder only, the full lockcase, or the whole locking system including handles and keeps.
- The security grade. Anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-drill cylinders cost more as hardware and are the reason most lock changes are worth doing.
- Keying. Whether several doors should share one key, which is cheap to arrange during the change and awkward afterwards.
- The door itself. A door that has dropped or a frame that has moved needs adjustment, or the new lock will bind exactly like the old one did.
The local reason lock changes are common
Nearly four in ten Algarve dwellings, 151,269 of 391,416 classic dwellings, are second homes or seasonal use rather than main residences. In Quarteira the share reaches 58.6 per cent and in Alvor 60.6 per cent. Source: INE, Censos 2021, quadro Q304, Algarve scope.
That is a coastline where a large share of houses are handed between guests, cleaners, gardeners, pool technicians and key holders over a season. Keys get copied for good operational reasons and are rarely all returned. A cylinder swap between seasons costs a fraction of the alternative and is the reason lock changes here are usually scheduled maintenance rather than a reaction to something going wrong. Where a property changes hands often, keyed-alike cylinders across the front door, the back door and the pool gate are worth specifying at the same visit.
Why no figure appears on this page
Because the number that would fit here does not exist as one number. A lockout at 3am that ends in a drilled cylinder and a new anti-snap lock, and a weekday cylinder swap that takes ten minutes, are both “a locksmith” and are nowhere near each other. A single figure would be right for one of them and misleading for the other, and you would meet the real price at the door.
What can be done instead is quote your case once it is clear which one it is. The service page for locksmiths in the Algarve covers what the work includes and how to reach someone quickly.
What to send, or say on the phone
- Locked out, or changing a lock. This decides everything else.
- A photo of the door edge and of the key, for a lock change.
- Whether the key is snapped, lost, or simply inside.
- The door type: timber, aluminium, PVC, reinforced, or a gate.
- Whether anyone else has keys, which is the question that turns a lockout into a lock change worth doing on the same visit.
The question that saves the most money
Ask what happens if the door cannot be opened without damage. A quote that covers only the good outcome is not a quote, it is an opening bid, and the drilled-cylinder case is common enough that it should be priced before anyone gets in a van. Agreeing both outcomes in advance is the difference between a price and a surprise.

Every price on this page depends on details only your job has. Describe it to Handyman Algarve, add a photo, and the quote comes back with the figure for that job, at no cost.
