How much does a plumber cost in Portugal?

There is no single hourly rate that answers this, and anyone who gives you one without asking what is wrong is guessing. The same three words, “I need a plumber”, cover replacing a washer in a mixer tap and repiping a house built in the seventies with galvanised steel behind the tiles. What is stable is the shape of the quote, and once you can read that shape, two quotes that look wildly different usually turn out to be describing different work.

How is plumbing work charged in Portugal?

Three patterns cover almost everything, and the trade you are calling decides which one you get.

• Time plus parts. The default for small repairs and for anything that has to be diagnosed first: a callout or a minimum first hour, then time, then whatever is fitted. Common for taps, cisterns, traps, a leaking connection under a sink.
• A fixed price for the job. Quoted after someone knows what the job is, either from photos or from a first visit. Common for a replacement appliance, a new shower valve, a run of pipe to a new position.
• By the unit or by the metre. Installation work rather than repair work, priced per point or per metre of pipe run: a new bathroom’s supply and waste, moving a kitchen sink to the other wall.

An emergency at nine on a Sunday evening is priced differently from the same fault on a Tuesday morning, in every country, and Portugal is no exception. That is not opportunism, it is what it costs to have someone available who is otherwise not working.

What makes one quote twice another?

Access to the pipe	A visible connection under a sink is cheap. A pipe under a tiled floor or chased into a wall is a different job, because the repair includes the opening and the making good

The part itself	A common brand held in stock is one price. A discontinued cartridge that must be ordered adds both cost and a second visit
Whether making good is included	Retiling, replastering and repainting after a repair is real work. Some quotes carry it, some assume you will arrange it
Distance	The Algarve is long. A callout to a village forty minutes from the nearest suitable trade carries that travel somewhere in the price
Water pressure and hardness	Hard water shortens the life of what is fitted and sometimes turns a repair into a replacement of the same part a second time

Why is there no euro figure on this page?

Because no single figure would survive contact with your job. As of 2026 the plumbing figures that circulate online for Portugal are national numbers at best, and often written for another country’s market entirely. None of them describe an Algarve house, its pipework or its access. Publishing one of them with our name next to it would make this page look more useful and leave you worse informed.

Every job is priced from its specifics instead: what is wrong, where it is, and when you need it. What you get from this page is what determines the number, and a free quote if you want the number itself for your own job. That is the whole of the offer, and it is a better deal than a confident average.

What to send so the quote is accurate

The difference between a vague estimate and a firm price is usually four photographs and two sentences.

1. A wide photo of the room or area, so the layout is visible.
2. A close photo of the thing that is wrong, with any brand name readable.
3. A photo of the isolating valve or stopcock if you can find it, and say so if you cannot.
4. What happens and when: constant drip, only under pressure, only when the washing machine drains, started after the water was off for works.

Add the age of the house if you know it and whether anything was done to that pipework before. A plumber who knows they are walking into a 1970s installation brings different fittings than one expecting modern plastic pipe.

Questions worth asking before you agree

• Is the diagnosis charged separately if I decide not to go ahead?
• Does the price include IVA?
• Is making good after the repair included, or arranged separately?
• If the fault is not what we both think it is, what happens to the quote?
• Is the part new, and which brand?

None of those questions are aggressive. A tradesperson who quotes properly expects them, and the ones who cannot answer them tell you something useful by not answering.
