How much does it cost to maintain a swimming pool?
Pool maintenance is the one home service quoted as a recurring cost rather than a job price, which is why a single figure never fits: what you pay depends on visits per month, and that depends on pool volume, the season, and whether anyone is swimming. A pool at an empty holiday house needs servicing whether or not it is used, and that surprises most owners. Handyman Algarve quotes on the visit pattern your pool actually needs, at no cost.
Almost every other job on this site is a one-off with a price. Pool maintenance is not: it is a service you buy by the month, and the related searches show people looking for it that way, asking per month, per year and weekly rather than asking what a visit costs. That changes what a quote is even made of.
What you are actually buying per month
- Visits. The number per month is the single largest driver, and it moves with the season.
- Chemicals. Consumed by sun and by bathers, so a hot month and a busy month both cost more product than a quiet one.
- Filtration hours. Electricity is the owner’s, but how long the pump must run is part of what the service specifies.
- Everything that is not maintenance. Pumps, salt cells, lights, seals and cracked fittings are repairs, and whether they sit inside or outside the monthly figure is the most common misunderstanding in a pool quote.
What moves the monthly figure
| Driver | Why it moves |
|---|---|
| Season | Weekly in summer, roughly fortnightly out of season |
| Occupied or empty | An empty house still needs chemistry held; bathers consume chlorine faster |
| Volume | More water, more product per correction |
| Surroundings | Trees, prevailing dust and an uncovered pool add netting and brushing |
| Salt or chlorine | Salt systems shift the cost from product to cell life and checks |
| Access to the plant | A cramped or distant pump room lengthens every visit |
| Cover | A cover cuts evaporation, debris and chemical loss, and pays back on the monthly |
Why the Algarve prices this differently
Nearly four in ten Algarve dwellings, 151,269 of 391,416 classic dwellings, are second homes or seasonal use rather than main residences. In Quarteira the share is 58.6 per cent and in Alvor 60.6 per cent. Source: INE, Censos 2021, quadro Q304, Algarve scope.
Heat is the other half of it. Faro records 44.7 tropical nights a year, nights that never fall below 20 °C, against 5.8 at Sagres. Source: IPMA climate normals 1991 to 2020.
Put those together and the local pattern is clear: a large share of pools belong to houses nobody is standing in, in a place warm enough that water chemistry moves fast and algae is opportunistic. That is why maintenance here is a standing arrangement rather than something switched on for the weeks the owner visits, and why the cheapest pool year is almost always the one where nothing was allowed to go green.
Where owners genuinely overspend
- Buying visits, then buying a recovery. Reducing winter visits to save a little and paying for a spring recovery is the classic false economy.
- Not knowing what the monthly covers. A cheap monthly that excludes consumables is not cheaper, it is unbundled.
- No cover. Evaporation, debris and chemical loss all drop with one, and the monthly follows.
- Ignoring filter pressure. Backwashing on a schedule instead of on the gauge either wastes water or lets the filter blind.
Why no monthly figure appears on this page
Because the figure that would fit here depends entirely on the visit pattern your pool needs, and that is set by volume, season, occupancy and surroundings before anyone has looked at it. A single number would describe one pool and mislead about the next one along the same street, and the search results that do carry numbers are mostly quoting other countries with other seasons.
What can be done is look at the pool and quote the pattern it actually needs. The service page for pool maintenance in the Algarve covers what a service visit includes.
What to send for a quote
- Rough dimensions, or the volume if you know it.
- Salt or chlorine.
- Whether the house is lived in year round, used seasonally, or rented out.
- A photo of the pool and one of the pump and filter.
- Whether there is a cover, and what grows near the water.
