How much does septic tank emptying cost in the Algarve?
As of 2026, septic tank emptying in the Algarve is priced per visit, and the visit is priced on the volume pumped up to the tanker's capacity, how far the tanker has to run hose from where it can park, how far the load travels to a licensed facility, whether the sludge has set hard, and the hour it is needed. A tank beside the drive and a tank at the bottom of a terraced plot hold the same volume and are not the same job. Handyman Algarve quotes the visit free, before the tanker is booked, from the approximate volume of the tank, two photographs and the date of the last emptying.
As of 2026, septic tank emptying in the Algarve is priced per visit: a tanker attends, pumps the tank out up to its capacity, and takes the load to a licensed treatment facility. What moves the figure is how much comes out, how close the tanker can park to the lid, how far the load has to travel, what state the sludge is in, and whether it is needed today.
How is a septic tank emptying visit priced?
Locally the service is called limpa-fossas, and it is sold as a visit rather than by the hour: the tanker travels to you, the crew opens the tank and pumps it out, and the load is driven to a licensed facility, discharged and documented. Each visit is priced within a volume band. The tanker has a fixed capacity, a household tank that fits inside one load is one visit, and a larger tank, or one left until it is brimming, may take a second trip or a bigger vehicle, which is why size is asked before quoting.
What moves the price up or down?
| What changes | Which way it moves the price |
|---|---|
| Volume and state of the contents | Liquid pumps fast; set sludge has to be broken up and sometimes diluted first |
| Where the tanker can stop | Extra hose is extra time, and past a certain distance and height the pump cannot lift the load |
| The track and the gate | A narrow track or a low gate decides which vehicle can come; a smaller tanker may need two trips |
| The lid | Visible and loose, or buried under gravel, paving or lawn and located first |
| Distance to the licensed facility | The Algarve is long, and the drive with a full tanker is part of the job |
| Timing | A planned weekday slot and an overflow on a Sunday are different visits |
| Extras | Water brought for dilution, and an inspection of the tank once it is empty |
Access surprises people most. Rural houses in the Algarve sit at the end of tracks built for a car, behind gates a tanker cannot pass, or on terraced ground with the tank well below the parking, and on those plots the geography is half the price. If you are not sure the tank is due at all, the checks in how to tell when a septic tank needs emptying take a few minutes and save a wasted visit.
Is emptying the same as cleaning or unblocking?
No, and the words get used loosely, so agree which one you are booking.
- Emptying pumps the accumulated sludge, crust and liquid out.
- Cleaning is emptying plus work on the tank itself: breaking up hardened sludge, rinsing the walls, clearing the inlet and outlet baffles. A tank left for many years usually needs cleaning, quoted once the lid is off.
- Unblocking is a different job with different equipment: the tank may be fine and the pipe from the house blocked, or the outlet to the soakaway clogged. Emptying fixes neither, so if the drains are slow but the tank is not full, say so.
Can the council empty a septic tank?
In some concelhos, yes. Lagoa’s municipal regulation is a concrete example. Where the public system is more than 20 metres from the property boundary, mains drainage does not count as available, and the owner has the right to ask the municipal sanitation service to collect and transport the sludge from their own tank. The availability and variable tariffs carry a guaranteed right to two cleanings a year, anything beyond that is charged per cubic metre of sludge collected, and the cleaning is carried out within 5 to 10 days of the request. Source: Município de Lagoa (Algarve), Regulamento Municipal do Serviço de Saneamento de Águas Residuais Urbanas, articles 13, 40 and 58, read in 2026.
That is Lagoa’s rule only; other concelhos differ, so ask your own câmara. A private tanker is the route when timing matters, when the job is more than a routine collection, or when no such service reaches you.
Why is there no figure on this page?
Because the price is set by the tank in front of the tanker and the ground between the two. A figure that fits a tank beside a tarmac drive in Lagoa is wrong for the same tank at the bottom of a terraced plot above Monchique, and the numbers online are written for other regions with other distances to treatment plants. A borrowed number would describe neither your tank nor your track.
What Handyman Algarve does instead is quote your case, free and before the tanker is booked, from three things: the approximate volume of the tank, a photograph of the lid and one of where a large vehicle would have to stop, and the date of the last emptying. The service page for septic tank emptying in the Algarve sets out what the visit includes and how the request is handled.
What should a written quote itemise?
A good quote names:
- The visit and the volume it covers, one load up to the tanker’s capacity, with a second load priced if the tank may need it.
- The hose run included, and the charge beyond it.
- Locating a buried lid, and breaking up or diluting set sludge, or a note that these are quoted on the day.
- Transport and disposal at a licensed facility, with the receipt supplied.
- Any out of hours or weekend supplement, and the inspection after emptying, in or out.
- Whether the total includes IVA.
What to ask before the tanker is booked
- What happens if the tank holds more than one load?
- Where can the tanker stop, and is the hose run to the lid included?
- Where is the load taken, and will I receive the receipt?
- Is the tank emptied, or emptied and cleaned?
- Is this a planned slot, and what changes if I need it sooner?
- Will someone look at the walls, the baffle and the outlet while it is empty, and tell me plainly if the soakaway is the real problem?
The last question matters most. A tank that fills again within weeks is telling you the drain field has stopped absorbing, and a second emptying is money towards a repair nobody has diagnosed. The right answer is the plain one: emptied today, and here is what to look at next.
